Ayurveda’s approach to respiratory disorders

Ayurveda believes when an imbalance of Kapha takes place in the body, respiratory disorders take place. Aggravated Kapha-Vata gets stored in the respiratory tract, lungs and sinuses. When mucus accumulates, it lowers the Agni or digestive fire. Since lungs are the vital organs that distribute prana or life force throughout the body, if the channels of lungs are obstructed with ama, then the nourishment to the body gets disturbed.

In Ayurveda, the respiratory disorders are called pranavaha srtoto roga, and disorders related to respiratory system are classified according to the systematic imbalance.
