GAYTARIN TABLETS: AYURVEDIC MEDICINE FOR GOITER

gaytarin tablets

When the thyroid gland is unable to produce enough thyroid hormones, a person suffers from hypothyroidism. Since thyroid hormones’ key function is to run the body’s metabolism, in this condition, the person will develop several symptoms due to slow metabolism.

Goiter is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland, found at the base of our neck when swollen can cause cough and make it difficult to swallow or breathe. Another cause of goiter, is a lack of iodine in the diet.

The thyroid gland produces hormones like thyroxine and triiodothyronine. These hormones circulate in the blood and regulate metabolism. They are responsible for maintaining the rate at which our body uses fats and carbohydrates. They also control our body’s temperature and influence our heart rate.

In Ayurveda, goiter is known as galaganda. Treatment of goiter depends on its size. Ayurvedic treatment for goiter focuses on the root cause of the problem for long-term relief with natural herbal medicines, diet and lifestyle modifications.

Symptoms of goiter

Goiter always doesn’t show symptoms. But some symptoms are swelling at the base of your neck. You can feel it from outside as you try to shave or put on makeup. You may also feel tightness in your throat. Coughing and hoarseness, difficulty in swallowing and breathing are some other symptoms of this disease.

How does goiter develop?

Iodine is very important for the production of thyroid hormones. People with iodine deficiency can develop goiter. The thyroid enlarges in an attempt to obtain more iodine. People with iodine deficiency should avoid foods like cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower, etc.

Goiter can also develop when your thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism). Someone who suffers from Graves’ disease, produce more antibodies by the immune system, which mistakenly attack the thyroid gland, causing it to produce excess thyroxine, which leads to swollen thyroid.

Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disorder. Hashimoto’s damages the thyroid and hormone secretion is reduced. The human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) hormones, produced during pregnancy, may also cause your thyroid gland to enlarge slightly.

Ayurveda to manage goiter

According to Ayurveda, goiter is caused due to vitiated Kapha. Sometimes Vata may also be the culprit. Vitiated Kapha mixes with fat tissues, causing heavy swelling in the throat, which is called galaganda or goiter.

Ayurveda suggests some home remedies to cure goiter. Jalkumbhi, an aquatic plant and drumstick increase the level of iodine in the body. Coriander (dhania) and jeerak siddha jala also help to sooth swelling. Raw vegetables like kale, broccoli and cauliflower should be avoided. Since thyroid problems trigger vitamin D deficiency, exposure to early morning sun is an excellent cure. Ayurveda also advises avoiding processed sugar and foods rich in natural sugars. Food rich in vitamin A like green leafy vegetables, fruits like apple and banana is good to consume. Boil some ginger in water and drink it like tea, it helps in thyroid.
