Today, people look for holistic treatments for illness, hence they tend to seek Ayurvedic treatments, which are holistic healing practices and Ayurvedic medicines are herbal based with no or fewer side effects.
Neurogenic pain
Neurogenic pain arises from the nervous system. It is the pain that occurs because of the peripheral nervous system dysfunction. Neurogenic pain can happen due to nerve damage or from a lesion in the central nervous system, such as thalamic pain after stroke, or stemming from loss or interruption of sensory nerve fibre transmissions.
Other common causes of neuropathic pain are nerve pressure or nerve damage due to a surgery or trauma, viral infections, cancer, vascular malformations, alcoholism, neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis and metabolic conditions such as diabetes.
Diabetic neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that occurs if you suffer from diabetes. High blood sugar (glucose) can damage nerves. Diabetic neuropathy usually damages nerves in your legs and feet.
Diabetic neuropathy symptoms are pain, numbness and tickling sensation, sharp pains or cramps, feet to problems with the digestive system, urinary tract, blood vessels and heart are quite common. For some people, diabetic neuropathy can be quite painful and disabling.
Peripheral neuropathy, the most common type of diabetic neuropathy, affects the feet and legs first, followed by the hands and arms. Autonomic neuropathy occurs when diabetes affects nerves in the heart, bladder, stomach, intestines, sex organs and eyes. Proximal neuropathy damages nerves in the thighs, hips, buttocks or legs. It can also affect the abdominal and chest area. Mononeuropathy refers to damage to a specific nerve. It can lead to vision problems, paralysis on one side of your face, numbness or tingling in your hand or fingers, except your little finger.
Ayurveda’s approach to diabetic neuropathy
According to Ayurveda, the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy like paraesthesia, pain and tingling sensation are indicating involvement of Vata dosha. Whereas burning sensation is because of vitiation of Pitta. Hence drugs pacifying Vata and Pitta doshas are useful in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy.
Ayurveda approaches the problem by increasing the natural healing ability of the body. Usually a healing plan with detoxification therapies followed by rejuvenation therapies is carried out. The detoxification therapies flush out the toxins. The rejuvenation therapies nourish the body and bring the functional elements back to balance and regenerate the body.
