Simple things you might be overlooking that causes the dryness in your skin

Most people will experience dry skin at some point in their lives, and it is usually nothing significant. Setting aside the fact whether it is a major health concern or not, it can make you feel quite uncomfortable and leave you feeling embarrassed. Dry skin can eventually lead to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

Ichthyosis is the serious dry skin condition that can have a significant impact on your look. The general reason of itchy, dry skin may be obvious: It’s due to the lack of moisture. So where does the moisture barrier happen? Alternate usage of hot or cold water, prolonged exposure to hot water, and low humidity in the air are all common ichthyosis triggers.

Here let’s discuss 10 surprising causes of dry skin!

  1. Fragrance has the potential to cause skin irritations. So, it’s better to avoid deodorants and skin-care products that are filled with fragrances.
  1. Soap may sap the moisture content from the skin and scalp. It is critical to select face washes, body washes, and laundry detergents with care. Using simple moisturizing body wash, is preferred to using harsh bar soap.
  1. Interestingly studies have proved the role of genes in increasing the risk of dryness on the skin. A study found that mutations in genes that affect the production of the protein filaggrin, which is involved in the formation and hydration of the skin barrier, can cause a variety of skin diseases.
  1. Hard water prevents the absorption of moisture. Hard water contains a high concentration of minerals like magnesium and calcium that can leave a film on skin that causes dryness. Furthermore, the presence of heavy metals in water causes the oils on the skin to thicken, clogging glands and exacerbating disorders such as acne.
  1. Acne medications and retinoids increase skin cell turnover, resulting in dryness. Salicylic acid, the most commonly used ingredient in acne treatment, has excellent results but may induce skin dryness as a side effect. Using retinol also leads to dry skin as it loosens the connection between cells on the skin’s surface.
  1. Continuous exposure to dry air, AC or staying indoors can increase symptoms of dry skin. Forced air, particularly heat, can reduce humidity levels, leaving skin dry and irritated.
  1. Excessive handwashing might cause redness and irritation. Some people with dry skin just wash their hands all the time. This will not alleviate the symptoms of dryness because over washing can result in dry, and cracked skin.
  1. Consistent long and hot showers can contribute to skin dehydration. It may be tempting to stand in the scalding hot water for an extended period of time, especially during the winter. Yet, this may cause problems with your skin. Taking long, steamy showers or baths might cause your skin to lose moisture.
  1. Ageing can increase the risk of skin dryness. As people get older, dry skin becomes more of an issue. Adults aged 40 and up are more likely to suffer from dry skin, which affects around half of this age range.
  1. Certain medical conditions can cause dry skin. Dry skin can be exacerbated by skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Dry skin, on the other hand, could also be a sign of something seemingly unrelated, such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, malnutrition, kidney failure, or Sjogren’s syndrome.
