KABASURA KUDINEER CHURNA: THE SAVIOUR OF LIVES IN TIMES OF CORONA

What medicine is in the forefront in Tamil Nadu’s battle against Covid-19?  You are wrong if your answer was not Kabasura Kudineer.  This Covid-19 season there is only one medicine which is helping people of this Southern State stay safe from this invisible enemy. Kabasura Kudineer not only prevents Covid-19 but also has cured hundreds of people with mild and moderate symptoms across the state.

Tamil Nadu government and people have benefitted from the decoction so much that the State Health Minister K Vijaybhaskar has announced opening “Siddha clinics in all districts in the state to prevent, control and manage Covid-19”. He said this after inaugurating a 100 bed Siddha facility to treat Covid-19 in Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu.

LIVE POSITIVE IMPACT

At least 75,000 Covid-19 patients in Tamil Nadu are being treated exclusively with Siddha medications. Of the 1,90,000+ people who have recovered from Covid-19 in the state almost all of them were either fully treated with Siddha medications or with a fusion of allopathic drugs and Siddha decoctions: Kabasura Kudineer and Nilavembu Kudineer.

When cases spiked in Chennai city and almost every area was turning into a containment zone, The Municipal Corporation and State Government actively started door-to-door delivery of Kabasura Kudineer. This coupled with other lockdown measures has flattened Chennai’s Covid curve. Kabasura Kudineer has become Tamil Nadu Government’s answer to normalize Containment Zones.

Of late, Kabasura Kudineer has also spread to Delhi. Officials in President’s Estate and other major bureaucratic circles have been introduced to this decoction and are actively consuming it as a preventive measure.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH BACKING

In the early days of COVID outbreak, Siddha decoctions Kabasura Kudineer and Nilavembu Kudineer were proposed as immunity boosters. Now, few months down the line, doctors from various streams have noticed the positive impact of Kabasura Kudineer in COVID prevention and management.

A study by students from Annamalai University titled “ANTI-INFLAMMATORY, ANTIPYRETIC AND ANTIBACTERIAL STUDY OF KABASURA KUDINEER CHOORNAM” published in the ‘International Journal of Current Advanced Research’ was the first scientific validation of Kabasura Kudineer. It noted high anti- microbial and anti-pyretic properties in Siddha treatise.

As Kabasura Kudineer’s popularity increased, it caught the attention of the scientific community. Though, they were initially dismissive of the Covid cure claims, research results have turned the tables. One such research paper titled “In Silico computational screening of Kabasura Kudineer – Official Siddha Formulation and JACOM against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein” made available in the “National Center for Biotechnology Information” of the ‘United States of America’ has identified that 9 of the 37 ingredients in Kabasura Kudineer have “high binding affinity against SARS COV-2 spike protein”. The study also proposed with some clinical validation Kabasura Kudineer can be effectively used to ‘cure’ Covid-19.

There were other studies based out of Chennai which also showed the same results. This has encouraged the apex body ‘Central Council of Research in Siddha medicines (CCRS)’ to take up research on ‘Siddha as a standalone treatment for Covid-19’.

PRELIMINARY HUMAN TRIALS POSITIVE

First such trials were conducted in a quarantine facility in Thirupatthur district and the LDH and CPK enzyme levels of the patients decreased after they were given Kabasura Kudineer. SARS Cov-2 hikes both these enzymes.

Similar studies have been conducted in many quarantines and Covid care facilities since and so far all results have only pointed to a positive impact.

SUPPORT FROM JUDICIARY

Earlier in July, Madras High Court had criticized the Tamil Nadu Government and AYUSH Ministry for delaying comprehensive research and clinical tests on Kabasura Kudineer when all research and observational results so far seems to suggest the decoction could cure Covid-19. The Court also condemned Government’s arrest of some Siddha doctors who claimed to cure Covid-19.

In another support statement from the judiciary, Supreme Court judge, Justice Indira Banerjee has endorsed Kabasura Kudineer as a preventive measure for Covid-19 in an open letter.

AYUSH MINISTRY

Ayush Ministry has also endorsed Kabasura Kudineer as an immunity booster and preventive measure for Covid-19.  In their document titled “GUIDELINES for SIDDHA PRACTITIONERS for COVID-19” the ministry has recommended consumption of 60 ml of the decoction twice a day, daily as a preventive measure.

HIGH SUCCESS RATE IN COVID CURE

Kabasura Kudineer has been distributed door to door, all across containment zones in Tamil Nadu as a preventive measure by the Government officials.  The State Development Minister, K Pandiarajan, has claimed a 100% success rate for Kabasura Kudineer in treatment of Covid-19 cases which did not require ventilators.  “Only three percent cases require oxygen support, in such cases, allopathy takes over. The remaining can be cured with Siddha” he said.
